Space environment (weightlessness, physical inactivity, confinement) induces morphological and functional changes at the cardiac level that could be measured by ultrasound. In this protocol we will use speckle-tracking technology to evaluate global and local myocardial contractility.

Cardiac function, especially left ventricle function differs in microgravity because of decrease in stroke volume, myocardial atrophy, decrease in physical inactivity and changes in fluid distribution mainly in the mediastinal and pulmonary areas.
Those changes could be associated with heart muscle remodeling and might be shown by speckle tracking. This method can show inside heart muscle preferential direction of segmental contraction.

A dedicated software for assessment of the myocardium contractility has been developed by LIPAD (Paris V) that will be used for processing the Cardiospace and CELSS data.

CELSS termination Dec 2016 During Confinement part of the echographic examination on the subjects confined in Shenzhen (China) were teleoperated from the University of Tours (France).Pr P Arbeille tele manipulated the probe in Shenzhen from Tours using a Dummy probe (similar to a Joystick) and Internet. He could change the orientation of the motorized transducer (VERMON France) at his convenience and also control the settings (Gain depth PW color… freeze) of the Echograph (TERASON 3000)
